THE ONCOLOGIST

THE ONCOLOGIST (founded in 1996), devoted to community and hospital-based oncologists and physicians entrusted to care for patients with cancer, was co-founded by Martin Murphy, Ann Murphy, Bruce Chabner, and Gregory Curt. Together, they assembled an international editorial board of experts in multiple oncology disciplines. The Journal CME Program, originally accredited by the NIH, launched in 1999. In 2000 the editorial board was expanded to include international experts, leading to the creation of the Society for Translational Oncology (STO) to further drive its mission forward. STO, as an accredited provider, continued the Journal CME Program, with over 80,000 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits awarded to physician-learners over the span of the program.
STO continues to collaborate with THE ONCOLOGIST to provide impactful education for oncology physicians and other healthcare professionals, with the goal of improving the quality and safety of care for patients with cancer.

STEM CELLS (founded in 1983), the world’s first journal devoted to this fast-paced field of research, was founded at the dawn of stem cell research and emerged as a pioneering journal under the leadership of Martin Murphy, and its founding editors Donald Metcalf, Laszlo G. Lajtha, and Fumimaro Takaku. Despite facing skepticism and controversy when hematopoietic stem cells were confined to the laboratory bench, far from the clinic, the journal’s founders persisted. STEM CELLS evolved into a cornerstone of stem cell research, shaping the field with influential publications, fostering collaboration, and championing scientific integrity.

STEM CELLS Translational Medicine (SCTM) (founded in 2011), serves as the “Sister Journal” to STEM CELLS to bridge bench science and clinical applications. Launched with the support of California’s Stem Cell Agency and IQVIA, the journals worked in tandem to accelerate translational science, advancing stem cell therapies and regenerative medicine by encouraging collaborations and facilitating the rapid sharing of knowledge among researchers, clinicians, and engineers. Together, the journals have accelerated the translation of laboratory discoveries into clinical therapies. Under the leadership of Founding Editor-in-Chief Anthony Atala, SCTM continues to advance regenerative medicine.
